Matial Arts DVDs and Home Training

Many of you may ask the question,  can learn from martial arts dvds.? The answer is absolutely yes! There are many area`s of study that make martial arts dvds as good or better then going to a school or dojo.

Certainly there are times when a live instructor and fellow students are necessary, but here we want to focus on the area`s that can be learned as well as, or often better, by using martial arts dvds at home.

The misconception that training videos aren`t effective probably stem from movies such as the original Karate Kid when Miagi walks in to fix the water faucet and sees Daniel practicing with a video.

The fact remains that this is still a superior way of learning if you know what to learn from dvds and what you do need an live instructor for.

Martial arts dvds are best used for three area`s of study.

1: If you are a beginner you can save yourself a lot of money, time and embarrasment by starting your training at home using martial arts dvds. One of the things that made it difficult at first for me to start training was both the cost and the time to travel to the school.

Once when I was first learning some stretching routines I accidently farted loudly. The whole class and even the instructor laughed. Talk about embarrassing. This kind of thing can be avoided by first getting your body used to the training and routines at home with the use of martial arts dvds.

Getting yourself in basic shape, getting your body more limber and use to doing the exercise and movement of martial arts and learning things like the basic kata`s can all be done easily at home for less money, no embarrassment and will save you the time of going to the school.

2: If you want to learn some specific technique for self defense you can often acheive this by using training video`s. Some techniques can be learned and practiced with a martial arts dummy and others will require a partner.

When you are first starting out you can choose to work with a partner or solo, but as you advance it will become necessary to sometimes have someone to practice the routine with. Having a partner is also often a good motivator for not missing practices.

3: As you become an advanced student you can often learn new techniques by getting and using martial arts dvds. Today the idea of mixed martial arts is common place.

In the past however, it was often frowned upon by schools who wanted to believe that their way was the best. Bruce Lee was one of the earliest to declare that learning techniques from many styles would create the best fighter.

Chuck Norris agreed with this idea and even created his own fighting style Chun Kuk Do ( the Universal Way) which incorporated his idea`s of mixed martial arts techniques.

Anyone watching MMA or UFC knows that both in competition and in self defense it is necessary to know more then just one style of martial arts techniques. If you are a great striker, but have no ground game then on the ground you have a serious problem.

If you are good on the ground, but find yourself against more then one person you best be able to stay on your feet because ground fighting is great against one oponent, but when there is more then one it wont help you much.

As you grow and become more advanced in your style of study, martial arts dvds can become an excellent source for you to learn new techniques from other styles to make you a well rounded fighter.
