Review of Martial Arts Games for Kids
With both a martial arts background and a degree in Physical Education, I admit to being skeptical when I read Martial Arts Games for Kids by Aaron Perry. I found some excellent games for education and maintaining student interest, loyalty and promotion of your martial arts school. I also found some points in the book I believe could be improved. Sorry it took so long to write an entry. I’ve tried to forget a lot of my being picked on as a kid and teenager. It was hard to pick one specific story but, since a lot happened in grade school, I went with the most serious in junior high…
My first year in junior high, seventh grade, I had the extreme pleasure of becoming a target for a bully named Tim Woods. He was a ninth grader and a burner (burner being the leather clad smoking hoodlums, preppie being the rich snotty kids, and jocks being, well, jocks…) and while he may have looked like Johnny from ‘The Karate Kid’ he had a more underlying sinister nature like Ace in Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’. My first encounter was on the morning bus when, I can’t remember why, he started on me. He didn’t do anything physical and didn’t yell, it was more of a father scolding his young son with the fear of what dad could do to you with the belt if you didn’t listen. Tim walked away and I flipped him off, so he came back. “Now, that wasn’t very smart was it, Jon. You know, I could beat the shit out you for that, right?” I answered, “Right”. “So, don’t do that again or you’ll get hurt.” Meanwhile, his friends were all laughing hysterically.
A few weeks later I’m standing at the bus stop when an orange car pulls up with Tim and some girl that also rode the bus with us. He almost hits me and then starts talking to another kid that picked on me, AJ Bonagoffski. My mom sees the car almost hit as I step of the curb and the next day there’s an article in the paper that Tim Woods and this girl (who’s name I forget) ran away. Since I’m the last guy who saw’em, I have to give a statement to the cops and he’s found in Alabama two days later. Rumors start spreading by his friends that he’s going to kill me and I pretty much live in fear the rest of my sophomore year of junior high until he graduates and disappears off the face of the earth.
So, there you go Rick. You need anymore, I’ve got plenty.
